Helpful SEO tips to help you get started

November 11, 2011

Businesses are quickly growing more aware of the need to understand and implement at least the basics of search engine optimisation (SEO). But if you read a variety of blogs and websites, you’ll see that there’s a lot of uncertainty over what these actually are.

Without access to high-level consulting and without a lot of experience knowing which SEO resources can be trusted, there’s also a lot of misinformation about certain SEO strategies and tactics. This article aims to spread some light on the beginner SEO tactics.

Contact Purple Cow for in-depth, professional search engine optimisation services.

4 SEO tips for beginners

Below are a few search engine optimisation tips for novices. These won’t get you ranking at the top of the Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs), but they’ll get rid of any factors that may be inhibiting your site’s potential to rank well.

  1. Title optimisation – Make sure that every page on your site has a unique title that is descriptive and precise. Try and fit everything you need into 70 characters or less, as Google doesn’t like lengthy titles. There’s no need to put your company name in the title as Google will usually know this from browsing through your site, rather save this space for relevant keyword phrases that best describe your page.
  2. Heading tags – It’s a good idea to make the heading of your page an H1. Like the title, you should make sure that this best describes the main topic of the page. Any sub topics can get a H2-H5. It’s a good idea to match your H1 tag to your title (these are allowed to be exactly the same).
  3. Write high-quality content – One of the most important SEO tips one can learn is that the quality of your content is what ultimately gets you ranked on search engines. Don’t repeat words over and over. Don’t keyword stuff. Write naturally. If you please users with interesting content, they’ll come back. Google knows if a visitor’s interested in your content and keeps track of your bounce rate (when someone leaves your site without exploring).
  4. Be social – It’s important that you become active in social media and make use of social networks such as Twitter and Facebook to promote all that great content you’ve written. A good way to do this is by using a blog aggregator like myScoop or a micro-blogging platform like My Chatbox to post your new entries. You may not be the most social person but Google is counting all your insights and comments every time you link back to your site.

Stick with high-quality content and write for your readers; you won’t go wrong. Contact Purple Cow today for expert advice and comprehensive SEO services.
